FAMILY ROLES

THE
GOLDEN CHILD.

When love and approval feel tied to being the one who gets it right, praise can become a role you learn to protect.

PRAISED FOR WHO
YOU HAD TO BE.

Being the golden child can mean being held up as the example: the one whose achievements, choices or behaviour reflect well on the family.

That attention may come with genuine affection and opportunities. It can also carry expectations: to keep succeeding, stay agreeable or become the person the family wants others to see.

When approval feels tied to meeting those expectations, there may be little room to struggle, disagree or choose a different direction. Being praised does not always mean feeling free to be yourself.

WHAT IT CAN FEEL LIKE

YOU LEARN TO STAY
WORTH PRAISING.

Praise can feel reassuring, while leaving you worried about what happens when you fall short.

You might rehearse how to admit a mistake, hide that you’re struggling or agree when you see things differently. Even resting can feel uncomfortable when you’re used to being the one who does well.

Over time, it can become harder to tell what you want from what will keep other people pleased.

01 LIVED EXPERIENCE

PRAISE HAS CONDITIONS.

You notice which parts of you are celebrated and learn to keep the rest quiet.

02 LIVED EXPERIENCE

MISTAKES FEEL EXPOSED.

Even a small mistake can feel bigger than it is, as though getting something wrong might change how people see you.

03 LIVED EXPERIENCE

LOYALTY IS EXPECTED.

You might find yourself agreeing with the family’s version of events, even when it doesn’t match what you remember.

04 LIVED EXPERIENCE

REST CAN FEEL UNEARNED.

Even when no one is asking more of you, it can be hard to feel that you have done enough.

A DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDING

YOU ARE MORE THAN
WHO THEY PRAISED.

You can value what you have achieved and still ask what it cost you.

Your achievements are yours. So are the parts of you that get tired, make mistakes or want something different. Understanding the role can help you make room for all of that, without feeling you have to earn your place first.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

WHO ARE YOU ALLOWED TO BE?

When you’ve spent a long time trying to keep people pleased, choosing what you want can feel unfamiliar.

Even when no one is asking you to prove yourself, you might notice how often you still feel you have to.

FOR REFLECTION

GETTING IT RIGHT.

What do you imagine might change if you made a mistake?

FOR REFLECTION

YOUR OWN WANTS.

When do you choose what will please others over what you actually want?

FOR REFLECTION

DISAPPOINTING SOMEONE.

Whose disappointment feels hardest for you to bear?

ROOM TO THINK

THERE IS ROOM
FOR MORE OF YOU.

You do not need to have everything worked out to talk about what you want for yourself.

A session with Sophie and Gaz gives you space to explore an expectation you’re carrying, a decision you’re facing or a boundary you want to hold. You can talk it through at your own pace and consider what feels right for you.
